This volume provides readers with an insight into Polish theatre pedagogy, offering an overview of its practices, thought and research. We bring you thirteen texts on a discipline which began developing in Poland in the early 2000s and is now at the heart of theatre life.
The articles featured in this publication were selected from a collection of twenty-five texts that made up the volume „Praktykując pedagogikę teatru. Pojęcia, wartości, przykłady” (Practising Theatre Pedagogy: Concepts, Values, Examples). The first edition, published locally in 2024 by the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute, examines two decades of the development of this discipline in Poland. Work on the publication began in 2023 with the involvement of current and former staff members of the Theatre Institute’s Theatre Pedagogy Department. Next, they invited several dozen individuals engaged in theatre pedagogy and cultural research to contribute texts. The team responsible for the Polish edition sought to capture the local nuances of theatre pedagogy. From its inception, the field evolved primarily through practical application, creating an integrated environment in which expertise developed organically. However, this progress was not accompanied by an equally robust theoretical foundation. Practice — the core of the discipline — therefore became the central focus for the authors, who reflected on it and derived from it the concepts and values shaping their work. The texts present a broad range of perspectives on theatre pedagogy. They discuss key concepts, introduce the philosophy and methodology of the field, and document its development to date. They also offer critical reflections, demonstrating the diversity of approaches among Polish practitioners and revealing their personal viewpoints.
The creation of the first foreign edition of this publication was driven by the desire to share Polish experiences in theatre pedagogy with the international theatre community by presenting key issues and outlining the history of the discipline’s development in Poland.
