The Theatre Institute, as part of its curatorial preparations for Prague Quadrennial 2027, is working to raise the visibility of set designers and costume designers as professions. Six artists have accepted the Institute’s invitation to a closed competition for the concept and execution of the Exhibition of Countries and Regions. The winner of the competition will be announced by 10 June 2026.
We are pleased to announce that the following artists have accepted the invitation of the Theatre Institute to participate in a closed competition for the concept and execution of the Exhibition of Countries and Regions at the Prague Quadrennial 2027:
Katarzyna Borkowska
Barbara Hanicka
Anna Maria Karczmarska
Magdalena Mucha
Marta Szypulska
Piotr Tetlak
The Institute invited the artists to participate in the competition on the basis of their artistic achievements in the field of set design or costume design for theatre and the performing arts, taking into account in particular the diverse representation of the diverse approaches observable within set and costume design, as well as the embodiment – through their existing artistic practice – of the PQ 2027 theme „Absences and Silences as Potential Areas for the Development of Future Scenography”. (For more information, see the PQ 2027 website: https://pq.cz/pq2027/artistic-concept/).
The Institute invited the following experts to sit on the competition committee, which will select the winner: Katarzyna Fazan, Fabien Lédé, Maciej Nowak, Felice Ross, and Hanna Wróblewska.
The competition results will be published on the Theatre Institute’s website by 10 June 2026.
The PQ 60
PQ is a special program celebrating the upcoming 60th anniversary of the event. It will focus on the Prague Quadrennial in its transformations over the past six decades. The aim of PQ 60 is not only to recognise PQ’s continuous existence but also to reflect on its role as a platform for scenography worldwide and, ultimately, chart paths for the future. The centrepiece of this section will be an immersive installation tracing the evolution of PQ within the context of global exchange and innovation in scenography. The organisers’ vision is to bring together, within this section, source materials in the form of artefacts, which will be juxtaposed with objects offering national and regional perspectives. The Theatre Institute has invited the Guild of Polish Theatre Set Designers to collaborate on the submission of an artefact to the PQ 60 section.

The project is developed by the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute as part of the Prague Quadrennial 2027 Main Programme.
“Implementation of the project of the 16th edition of the Prague Quadrennial” is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
