Arts Institute – Theatre Institute in Prague invites you to a translation residency, which will take place from September 12 to 22, 2024, in Prague and Pilsen. The residency is for translators who translate dramatic texts from Czech into Polish, Ukrainian, Croatian, Estonian, Armenian or Georgian.
The open call is intended for translators of theatre plays from Czech into Polish, Estonian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Armenian, or Georgian. The residency consists of a 10-day stay in the Czech Republic (Prague and the International Theatre Festival in Pilsen) and the translation of one of the contemporary Czech playwrights’ plays mentioned below. The translation residency also includes feedback on the translation from a professional mentor and networking opportunities during the stay in the Czech Republic coordinated by the International Cooperation Department of PerformCzech / Arts Institute – Theatre Institute.
The PerformCzech SKILLS open call is part of the Drama Revival project, a learning and networking program for translators of contemporary drama. The aim is to provide tools and activities to enhance the professional skills and knowledge of a young generation of translators, and to encourage motivation for exploring and promoting new contemporary plays from the Central and Eastern European region. The program includes theoretical knowledge and practical activities for playwrights, translators, theatre creators, and academics engaged in contemporary drama. Additionally, the program supports the mapping and understanding of dramatic literature in Central and Eastern European countries.
The project is implemented by the International Cooperation Department of PerformCzech / Arts Institute – Theatre Institute.
Date and venue: Prague, Pilsen, Czech Republic from September 12 to September 22, 2024; completion of translation by November 30, 2024.
Support Provided: Artistic fee of 25,000 CZK for translating one play + travel and accommodation expenses in the Czech Republic during the specified dates, up to 20,000 CZK.
Who Can Apply: Translators of theatrical plays from Czech into Polish, Estonian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Armenian, or Georgian.
Limit: Up to 3 grants available for professionals.

Criterias:
- Applicant’s previous achievements and professional qualifications
- The selection process is open only to individuals aged 18 or older on the day of application.
Mandatory attachments:
- Professional CV and portfolio in English
- Motivational letter in Czech
- List of translated theatrical plays, or translations from Czech, with samples if available
- Proposal for translating one of the plays from the above-mentioned list

Applications will be evaluated by the Dramaturgical Board of PerformCzech as the advisory body of IDU, and representatives from partner organizations of the PerformCzech SKILLS: Drama Revival project.
