This year’s celebration of the International Dance Day we dedicate to Ukrainian-Polish unity in times of war. The three-day program was created in close cooperation between dance figures from Ukraine and Poland. By sharing our dance through workshops, performances, film screenings and discussions, we find congenial friends and strengthen our resilience to the challenges of the new historical reality.

Panel discussion

“The right to stay in our places”

the right to stay in their own places

“Information hunger and conceptual confusion”

Poland and Ukraine have always been close in the fields of dance and art. We have been conducting joint projects for years, getting to know each other through lectures, creative laboratories, workshops and artistic cooperation. We support each other, teach each other, promote and create together. During our meeting on the occasion of the International Dance Day we would like to talk about our common experiences, about what is new in Ukrainian dance, about what we have already created and about what we can and want to create together in Ukraine, Poland, Europe and the world. We have invited dance people from Poland and Ukraine – researchers, theoreticians, choreographers with strong ties to the dance environment of both nations – to join our conversation.

Free invitations to the event are available on the Institute’s website and at GoOut.net.

Together but Far from – The Ukrainian-Polish performance directed and choreographed by Ilona Gumowska

Dancers from Ukraine will take part in this improvised performance with live music by Paweł Szamburski. Some of them fled the war, others found themselves in Poland just before it started.

Tickets at 15, 25 and 50 are available on the Institute’s website and at GoOut.net. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the Trans Kultura Foundation.

The film “Vodurudu” directed by Anatolij Sachivko and shows by students and graduates

On Saturday evening (30.04) in the hall of Theater Institute there will be the Polish premiere of the film “Vodurudu” directed by Anatolij Sachivko and choreographic presentations by students and graduates of dance departments from Poland.

Tickets at 15, 25 and 50 zloty are available on the Institute’s website and at GoOut.net. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the Trans Kultura Foundation.

“I will wade into the redwater, that’s my will of the thought, movement, spirit”

Vodurudu is an improvisational folk film-ballet, which originates from the environment and time. A tribe of free people, who have found their nature in constant motion, is at the core of the plot. Clinging together and to their nature, they travel through ages and seasons, occasionally coming into direct contact with the outside world.

Vodurudu, a visual plastic work-reflection, is an act of revival of the Ukrainian national culture through music, poetry and dance, which retransmit the original spirit and will of the Ukrainian people to the present.

“The whole material is the author’s reflection, motivated by sincere concern for future generations”, – Anatolii Sachivko.
You can watch the film exclusively on the Theater Institute Youtube channel only from April 28 to April 30.

Calendar

The war in Ukraine and the genocide committed by russia were shocking to the whole world. But, unfortunately, history repeats itself and nowadays there are people in every corner of the Earth who have been affected by the war experience. What can we do about it if even realizing the past wrongs can’t protect us?

We, Ukrainians, have found our strength by uniting around the common truth, our craving for freedom, justice and life. When we are together, our pain turns into a powerful creative and life-affirming energy, fear disappears, and shared experiences become our shared pride.

Since the very beginning of the war, the people of Ukraine and Poland have been working side by side. On the International Dance Day, we consolidate our unity in the field of art and present a program that is the result of cooperation between the Ukrainian and Polish dance community. We invite you to dance together, communicate together, get to know each other by means of words and movement for 3 days, thus hardening the power that can overcome the most reckless evil.

– Polina Bulat, a Ukrainian dance journalist and manager, co-coordinator of the International Dance Day program at the Theater Institute.
